Following the 14th race of the 2018 Formula 1 season, the Italian Grand Prix, three more teams were eliminated from championship contention.

A total of six of the 10 Formula 1 teams entered the 14th race of the 21-race season, the Italian Grand Prix, still mathematically eligible to win this season’s constructor championship, as the other four were mathematically eliminated after the Belgian Grand Prix.

Following the 53-lap race around the 11-turn, 3.600-mile (5.793-kilometer) Autodromo Nazionale Monza road course in Monza, Italy, three more teams have been mathematically eliminated from championship contention, leaving just three teams in the title fight.

The three teams that have been mathematically eliminated from championship contention following the Italian Grand Prix are Renault Sport, Haas and McLaren.

With a maximum of 43 points on the table for each team in each race since each team can have one of their drivers win each race and score 25 points and finish in second place in each race and score 18 points, all teams who were within 344 points of Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport coming into the race were still mathematically eligible to win the championship since there will still eight races left on the 2018 schedule.

Mercedes came into the race with 375 points, meaning all teams that had at least 31 points still had a chance to win this year’s constructor championship. Because Mercedes won the race with Lewis Hamilton and finished in third place with Valtteri Bottas, they scored 40 points (25 and 15) and have now earned 415 points so far this season.

Because of the fact that there are now seven races remaining on this year’s schedule, a maximum of 301 points are on the table for each team until the 2018 season reaches its conclusion.

As a result, all teams that who are not within 301 points of Mercedes, meaning all drivers who have not scored at least 114 points so far this season, have been eliminated from championship contention.

Renault entered the Italian Grand Prix in fourth place in the constructor standings with 84 points. Nico Hulkenberg finished the race in 13th place and failed to score points for the team while Carlos Sainz Jr. finished in ninth and two points, bringing them to 86 points this season.

Haas entered the Italian Grand Prix in fifth place in the constructor standings with 76 points. Kevin Magnussen finished the race in 16th place and failed to score points for the team while Romain Grosjean finished in sixth but was disqualified, meaning he failed to score points as well.

McLaren entered the Italian Grand Prix in sixth place in the constructor standings with 52 points. Stoffel Vandoorne finished the race in 12th place and failed to score points for the team while Fernando Alonso was forced to retire and also failed to score points, as he was officially scored in 18th.

The only three teams that are still mathematically eligible to win this season’s constructor championship are Mercedes, Scuderia Ferrari and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing.

While three teams are still eligible to win this year’s Formula 1 constructor championship, the battle will likely come down to Mercedes and Ferrari. Mercedes currently lead Ferrari by 25 points in the constructor standings while Red Bull Racing sit 142 points behind Ferrari and 167 points behind Mercedes in a distant third place.
