IndyCar: Felix Rosenqvist tops first 2019 St. Petersburg practice session

Rookie Felix Rosenqvist topped the speed chart in the opening practice session for the 2019 IndyCar season opener, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist opened up the 2019 IndyCar season by topping the speed chart in the first practice session for the season opener, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Peterburg.

Rosenqvist topped the speed chart in the opening practice of the 2019 season by recording a top lap time of 61.8215 seconds (104.818 miles per hour) around the 14-turn, 1.8-mile (2.897-kilometer) temporary street circuit in St. Petersburg, Florida in his #10 Honda.

Rosenqvist led a top six Honda sweep of the session. Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay, Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports rookie Marcus Ericsson, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon, Andretti Autosport’s Alexander Rossi and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato rounded out the top six by finishing in second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth place in their #28 Honda, #7 Honda, #9 Honda, #27 Honda and #30 Honda, respectively.

Team Penske teammates Josef Newgarden and Will Power were the fastest Chevrolet drivers of the practice session. They finished in seventh and 10th place in their #2 Chevrolet and #12 Chevrolet, respectively.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal and Andretti Autosport’s Zach Veach, the other two drivers who finished the practice session in the top 10, finished in eighth and ninth place in their #15 Honda and #26 Honda, respectively, giving Honda drivers eight of the top nine positions on the speed chart in the session.

The second practice session for the race is scheduled to take place this afternoon from 2:20 p.m. ET through 3:05 p.m. ET, and the third and final practice session for the race is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 10:25 a.m. ET through 11:10 a.m. ET. Both of these practice sessions are set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold.

The qualifying session for the race is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 2:30 p.m ET through 4:00 p.m. ET, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network.

The morning warm-up session for the race is scheduled to take place from 9:20 a.m. ET through 9:50 a.m. ET on Sunday, March 10, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold. The race itself is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET.
