IndyCar: Ryan Hunter-Reay tops third 2019 St. Petersburg practice session

Ryan Hunter-Reay topped the third and final practice session for the 2019 IndyCar season opener, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

After topping the speed chart in the second practice session for the 2019 IndyCar season opener, the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Andretti Autosport’s Ryan Hunter-Reay remained on top of the speed chart prior to qualifying for the race by topping it in the third and final practice session of the weekend.

Hunter-Reay topped the speed chart in the second practice session for the 2019 season opener by recording a top lap time of 60.8966 seconds (106.410 miles per hour) around the 14-turn, 1.8-mile (2.897-kilometer) temporary street circuit in St. Petersburg, Florida in his #28 Honda.

Hunter-Reay’s fastest lap time of this practice session was just 0.0003 seconds (0.01 miles per hour) faster than his fastest lap in yesterday’s second session.

Honda drivers took two of the top three positions on the speed chart in this practice session while Chevrolet drivers took four of the top six. The fastest Chevrolet driver of the session was Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden, who finished in second place in his #2 Chevrolet. Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Takuma Sato finished in third in his #30 Honda.

Team Penske teammates Simon Pagenaud and Will Power and Ed Carpenter Racing’s Ed Jones rounded out the top six by finishing in fourth, fifth and sixth place in their #22 Chevrolet, #12 Chevrolet and #20 Chevrolet, respectively.

Honda drivers did manage to take six of the top 10 positions on the speed chart in this practice session, as Chip Ganassi Racing teammates Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist, who topped the speed chart in the opening practice session for the race, Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta and Andretti Autosport’s Marco Andretti rounded out the top 10 by finishing in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #9 Honda, #10 Honda, #88 Honda and #98 Honda, respectively.

The qualifying session for the race is scheduled to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network today from 2:30 p.m ET through 4:00 p.m. ET, and the morning warm-up session for the race is scheduled to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Gold tomorrow from 9:20 a.m. ET through 9:50 a.m. The race itself is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 12:30 p.m. ET before it is scheduled to get underway at roughly 1:30 p.m. ET.
