IndyCar: Josef Newgarden tops first 2019 Circuit of the Americas practice session

Josef Newgarden topped the speed chart in the opening practice session for the second race of the 2019 IndyCar season, the IndyCar Classic, at Circuit of the Americas.

Team Penske’s Josef Newgarden opened up the weekend of the second race of the 17-race 2019 IndyCar season, the IndyCar Classic, at Circuit of the Americas by topping the speed chart in the first practice session for the race.

Newgarden topped the speed chart in this practice session by recording a top lap time of 108.6567 seconds (112.980 miles per hour) around the 20-turn, 3.41-mile (5.488-kilometer) Circuit of the Americas road course in Austin, Texas in his #2 Chevrolet.

Honda drivers swept the next five positions on the speed chart in this practice session. Harding Steinbrenner Racing rookie Colton Herta finished in second place in his #88 Honda while Andretti Autosport teammates Alexander Rossi and Ryan Hunter-Reay finished in third and fourth in their #27 Honda and #28 Honda, respectively.

Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s Graham Rahal and Chip Ganassi Racing rookie Felix Rosenqvist finished in fifth and sixth place on the speed chart in this practice session in their #15 Honda and #10 Honda, respectively.

Team Penske teammates Simon Pagenaud and Will Power, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Scott Dixon and Carlin’s Max Chilton, the highest finishing non-Team Penske Chevrolet driver of this practice session, rounded out the top 10 on the speed chart in this session by finishing in seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, in their #22 Chevrolet, #12 Chevrolet, #9 Honda and #59 Chevrolet, respectively.

The second practice session for the race is scheduled to take place this afternoon from 3:05 p.m. ET through 4:05 p.m. ET, and the third and final practice session for the race is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 11:00 a.m. ET through 11:45 a.m. ET. NBC Sports Gold is set to broadcast both of these practice sessions live.

The qualifying session for the race, which is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network, is scheduled to take place tomorrow from 3:00 p.m ET through 4:15 p.m. ET. The race itself is scheduled to begin at 1:30 p.m. ET on Sunday, March 24, and it is set to be broadcast live on NBC Sports Network beginning at 1:00 p.m. ET.
