NASCAR: Kyle Busch aiming for third career tripleheader sweep at Texas
By Asher Fair
Kyle Busch is aiming to secure the third tripleheader sweep of his NASCAR career in tomorrow’s Cup Series race at Texas Motor Speedway, the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500.
After Kyle Busch won the NASCAR Truck Series and Xfinity Series races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway but came up short in the Cup Series race at the track with a third place finish, where a win would have given him the third tripleheader weekend sweep of his NASCAR career, Texas Motor Speedway became highlighted on his calendar.
This weekend at Texas Motor Speedway is the second of two weekends during which Busch was slated to compete in a Truck Series race, and Xfinity Series race and a Cup Series race as he seeks to sweep a tripleheader weekend for the third time in his career.
The first two tripleheader weekend sweeps of Busch’s career took place in August of 2010 and August of 2017. He won the Truck Series, Xfinity Series and Cup Series races at Bristol Motor Speedway on both of those occasions.

With a victory in tomorrow’s Cup Series race, the O’Reilly Auto Parts 500, at Texas Motor Speedway, the 33-year-old Las Vegas, Nevada native will make the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) high-banked oval in Fort Worth, Texas the second track at which he has completed a tripleheader weekend sweep.
Busch is set to start this race in 16th place in his #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota following a disappointing qualifying session.
Busch opened up the weekend by winning Friday night’s Truck Series race, the Vankor 350, at the track, and he won it in dominant fashion in his #51 Kyle Busch Motorsports Toyota, leading 97 of its 147 laps. While he did not dominate Saturday afternoon’s Xfinity Series race, the My Bariatric Solutions 300, at the track, as he only led 33 of its 200 laps in his #18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota, he led lap 200 to put himself in victory lane for the second time in two races this weekend.
As far as his history in Cup Series races at Texas Motor Speedway is concerned, Busch has had success, especially recently. In 26 career starts at the track, he has recorded 12 top five finishes, including seven top three finishes and three victories. He has recorded an average finish of 11.81, and his three victories have all come in his last 11 starts there. He won last year’s spring race at the track after starting in eighth place.
