After proving successful in March of 2019, IMSA and WEC announced Thursday that they will reunite at Sebring International Raceway again in 2020.

What’s better than endurance prototypes and built-to-last supercars competing in a 1,000-mile race on a Friday? More prototypes and supercars racing for 12 hours on Saturday. Such an event enthralled motorsports enthusiasts at Sebring International Raceway earlier this year in March.

In fact, the event went over so well that the World Endurance Championship (WEC) and the International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) announced SuperSebring 2020 on Thursday.

This event is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, March 18, 2020 with practices ranging over two days. On Friday, March 20, the WEC is scheduled to host the 1,000 Miles of Sebring, and on Saturday, IMSA is scheduled to host the 68th Annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring Presented by Advance Auto Parts.

SuperSebring 2019 proved successful by all metrics. Sebring International Raceway announced that there were bumps in attendance, media coverage, sponsorships, hospitality and merchandise sales from the Twelve Hours of Sebring in 2018. The race also reportedly saw a 46% increase in viewership on NBC Sports Network and CNBC.

The races themselves also delivered, with two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso breaking the track’s all-time lap record en route to a victory in the 1000 Miles of Sebring alongside co-drivers Sebastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima driving for Toyota Gazoo Racing.

The Twelve Hours of Sebring, which featured 28 lead changes, featured Whelen Engineering Racing drivers Eric Curran, Pipo Derani and Felipe Nasr winning by just 1.030 seconds over Konica Minolta Cadillac drivers Jordan Taylor, Matthieu Vaxiviere and Renger van der Zande in second place.

The standard set by SuperSebring 2019 will be hard to live up to, but if SuperSebring 2020 can at least come close to matching it, the event will be on its way to becoming one of the premier motorsports weekends on the calendar, deserving mention alongside Memorial Day Sunday with the Monaco Grand Prix, the Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 as well as Speedweeks at Daytona International Speedway for the Daytona 500.

Being endurance racing, there’s always something so see, whether it’s two LMP cars trying to cleanly race while fighting for positions or a GT car holding up a much faster Prototype car while trying to win its own race. For fans who can’t get enough racing, this is one event to circle on the 2020 calendar. Both races should combine to last for over 20 hours and for around 2,300 miles of racing.
