Carlos Sainz Jr. qualified for the 2019 Formula 1 season’s seventh race, the Canadian Grand Prix, in ninth place, but he has been issued a three-position grid penalty.
McLaren’s Carlos Sainz Jr. has been issued a three-position grid penalty for the seventh race of the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season, the Canadian Grand Prix, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
The 24-year-old Spaniard originally qualified his Renault-powered car in ninth place for this race by recording a top lap time of 73.981 seconds (131.872 miles per hour) around the 14-turn, 2.71-mile (4.361-kilometer) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course on Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in the third and final round of qualifying for this race.
However, he was issued a three-position penalty for impeding Scuderia Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon through turns one and two in the first round of qualifying for the race.
Here is what Sainz Jr. had to say about the matter, according to Motorsport.
"“It is an incident I apologize for and the whole team apologizes. It ended up costing us three places.”"
Here is what Albon had to say about it, according to Motorsport.
"“I didn’t really do a first big push, and then the next lap I had traffic so I basically had one lap to get into Q2 and I didn’t think it was good enough. But when I saw [the time] I was like, I’ll take that!”"

Albon still ended up advancing to the second round of qualifying for this race and qualifying in 14th place, so the fact that Sainz Jr. impeded him did not prevent him from moving past the first round. Additionally, Sainz Jr.’s three-position grid penalty will have absolutely no effect on Albon’s starting position.
Sainz Jr. is now set to start this 70-lap race in 11th place, not 12th, as a result of his three-position grid penalty, as Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen, who originally qualified in 10th, is set to start from the pit lane after his crash to end the second round of qualifying for the race led to a chassis change.
Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who originally qualified for this race in 11th place, is now set to start in ninth while Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, who originally qualified in 12th, is now set to start in 10th. Albon is set to start in 13th.
The Canadian Grand Prix is set to be broadcast live on ABC from Circuit Gilles Villeneuve this afternoon beginning at 2:00 p.m. ET, so be sure not to miss the 2019 Formula 1 season’s seventh race.
