Sebastian Vettel took the pole position, his first of the 2019 Formula 1 season, for the Canadian Grand Prix, the seventh race on the schedule.

Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel took his first pole position in the 21-race 2019 Formula 1 season by taking the pole position for the season’s seventh race, the Canadian Grand Prix, at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. This pole position ended a 16-race pole drought for the 31-year-old German going back to last July’s German Grand Prix.

Vettel took the pole position for the 70-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.71-mile (4.361-kilometer) Circuit Gilles Villeneuve road course on Parc Jean-Drapeau in Montreal, Quebec, Canada by recording a top lap time of 70.240 seconds (138.895 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for the race.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton is set to start alongside Vettel on the front row in second place. Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc is set to start in third. Renault’s Daniel Ricciardo and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Pierre Gasly are set to round out the top five on the starting grid after qualifying in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg and McLaren teammates Lando Norris, a rookie, and Carlos Sainz Jr. are set to round out the top nine on the starting grid after qualifying in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth place, respectively.

Rich Energy Haas’ Kevin Magnussen advanced to the third and final round of qualifying for the race with the 10th fastest lap time in the second round, but he did not participate in the third round as a result of the fact that he crashed at the end of the second round.

Ironically, Magnussen’s crash essentially secured him a spot in the top 10, as he likely would have dropped at least one position on the speed chart and not advanced to the third round had he not brought out the second round-ending red flag with his wreck.

Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, Scuderia Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat, Alfa Romeo Racing rookie Antonio Giovinazzi, Toro Rosso rookie Alexander Albon and Haas’ Romain Grosjean were eliminated following the second round of qualifying for the race and are set to start in 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th and 15th place, respectively.

SportPesa Racing Point’s Sergio Perez, Alfa Romeo Racing’s Kimi Raikkonen, Racing Point’s Lance Stroll and ROKiT Williams Racing teammates George Russell, a rookie, and Robert Kubica were eliminated following the first round of qualifying for the race and are set to start in 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th place, respectively.
