Formula 1: Mercedes’ best stretch of tracks still to come in 2019
By Asher Fair
Mercedes have started the 2019 Formula 1 season with seven consecutive victories, but their best stretch of tracks is still to come.
What has been a 2019 Formula 1 season dominated by Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport may get even worse for their rivals. Even with seven victories in the season’s first seven races, their best stretch of tracks is still to come.
Of the seven tracks that have hosted races so far this season, six were on the 2014 schedule and the 2015 schedule and all seven were on the 2016, 2017 and 2018 schedules.
After winning at five of these six tracks in the 2014 season, all six of them in the 2015 season and six of the seven in the 2016 season, Mercedes won at only three of the seven in the 2017 season and two of the seven in the 2018 season. In total, they failed to win 11 of these 33 races, including nine of the last 14.
Of the 14 tracks that are still on the 2019 schedule, 12 were on the 2014, 2015 and 2017 schedules, 13 were on the 2016 schedule and all 14 were on the 2018 schedule.

Mercedes won at 10 of these 12 tracks in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, all 13 of them in the 2016 season, nine of the 12 in the 2017 season and nine of the 14 in the 2018 season. In total, they only failed to win 12 of these 63 races.
In other words, based on recent trends, the best is yet to come for the team that have won nine consecutive races going back to the 2018 season.
Sure, Mercedes’ prowess over the last few years at the 14 tracks that are still on the 2019 schedule has been on a slight decline, but so was their prowess over the last few years at the seven tracks that have already been contested this season. That didn’t stop them from winning each and every one of them this year, and as noted above, they have typically been stronger at the tracks that remain on this year’s schedule compared to the seven tracks at which they have already won this season.
So for the rest of the field, mainly for their two chief rivals, Scuderia Ferrari and Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, the bleeding might not be done.
After coming three wins away from perfect 19-win seasons in both the 2014 and 2015 Formula 1 seasons and two wins away from a perfect 21-win season in the 2016 season, Mercedes’ start to the 2019 season, which is the best start to a season since McLaren won the 1988 season’s first 11 races, has them in position to make a serious run at a perfect season, especially given how the remaining schedule looks as far as the tracks are concerned.
