Eight drivers are still mathematically eligible to win the 2018-2019 Formula E driver championship with two races remaining on the schedule.

Only the two races of the New York City ePrix remain on the 2018-2019 Formula E schedule with 11 of the season’s 13 races having been contested.

With these two races remaining on the schedule, there are eight drivers who are still mathematically eligible to win this season’s driver championship.

A total of 16 drivers entered the season’s 11th race, the Swiss ePrix, at Bern Street Circuit still mathematically eligible to pull this off, but eight of these 16 drivers were eliminated as a result of this race.

With a maximum of 29 points (25 points for winning, three points for taking the position and one point for recording the race’s fastest lap time) on the table for each driver in each race, a maximum of 58 points are still on the table for each driver throughout the remainder of the season.

As a result, all drivers who are not currently within 58 points of the leader of the driver standings are no longer mathematically eligible to win this season’s driver championship. A total of eight drivers, seven not including the leader of the standings, DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne, are still within this 58-point margin and still have a chance to win this title. These seven drivers are all within 55 points of Vergne’s point total, which is 130.

Here are the top eight drivers in the driver standings following the 2019 Swiss ePrix at Bern Street Circuit.

Rank – Driver, Car, Team, Manufacturer: Points (Behind)
1st – Jean-Eric Vergne, #25, DS Techeetah, Spark-DS Automobiles: 130 (0)
2nd – Lucas di Grassi, #11, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, Spark-Audi: 98 (-32)
3rd – Mitch Evans, #20, Panasonic Jaguar Racing, Spark-Jaguar: 87 (-43)
4th – Andre Lotterer, #36, DS Techeetah, Spark-DS Automobiles: 86 (-44)
5th – Antonio Felix da Costa, #28, BMW i Andretti Motorsport, Spark-BMW: 82 (-48)
6th – Robin Frijns, #4, Envision Virgin Racing, Spark-Audi: 81 (-49)
7th – Sebastien Buemi, #23, Nissan e.dams, Spark-Nissan: 76 (-54)
8th – Daniel Abt, #66, Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler, Spark-Audi: 75 (-55)

With eight of the maximum 58 points available for each driver being bonus points, this means that Nissan e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Daniel Abt are already in positions where must score bonus points in order to even have a chance to win this season’s driver championship, as they trail Vergne by more than 50 points (two victories) for the lead of the driver standings.

The highest driver in the driver standings who has already been mathematically eliminated from championship contention is Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird, who sits in ninth place in the standings with 69 points and trails Vergne by 61 points.

While eight drivers are still mathematically eligible to win the 2018-2019 Formula E driver championship, several of these drivers are on thin ice when it comes to remaining mathematically eligible to do so beyond the next race, which is the season’s penultimate race.

This race, which is the first of two races of the New York City ePrix, is scheduled to take place at Brooklyn Street Circuit in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York on Saturday, July 13.

Who will ultimately be crowned champion of Formula E’s fifth season? The season finale, which is the second race of the New York City ePrix, is scheduled to take place just one day later on Sunday, July 14.
