Cole Custer earned his series-high fifth victory of the 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series season by winning the season’s 17th race, the Alsco 300, at Kentucky Speedway.

Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer broke the tie atop the NASCAR Xfinity Series wins list with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell by holding off Bell to earn his fifth victory of the season. He did so in the 17th of 33 races on the 2019 schedule, the Alsco 300, at Kentucky Speedway. This victory is his second victory in the last three races and his third victory in the last six races.

Custer started this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Kentucky in fifth place in his #00 Ford, and he won it by 1.651 seconds over Bell in second in his #20 Toyota.

Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick, who is considered one of the “Big 3” along with Custer and Bell, finished in third place in his #2 Chevrolet as the race’s highest finishing Chevrolet driver. Custer, Bell and Reddick have combined to win 12 of the season’s first 17 races.

This race featured a total of 13 lead changes among eight drivers. Aside of Custer, who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 88 laps led, seven drivers led at least one lap of the race.

These seven drivers were Bell, Briscoe, Gragson, Allgaier, Haley, Team Penske’s Austin Cindric, who started the race from the pole position, and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones, who lost a chance to contend for the race victory due to a mechanical issue in the race’s third and final stage. Bell won stage one and stage two and led 72 of the 112 laps that Custer did not lead.

This race also featured a total of five caution flag periods, of which three took place as a result of on-track incidents and the usual two took place to end stages one and two. Of the 38 drivers who started the race, 27 finished it, and of the 27 drivers who finished the race, only five finished on the lead lap.

Bell was the only driver who finished within 12.8 seconds of Custer, and Reddick was the only driver aside of Bell who finished within 26 seconds of Custer after a lengthy final green flag stint separated the field.
