Formula E: Robin Frijns wins 2019 New York City ePrix Race 2

Robin Frijns closed out the 2018-2019 Formula E season by earning his second victory of the season in New York City ePrix Race 2.

Envision Virgin Racing’s Robin Frijns secured his second victory of the 2018-2019 Formula E season and the second victory of his Formula E career by winning the 13-race season finale, New York City ePrix Race 2, at Brooklyn Street Circuit.

Frijns started this 36-lap race around the 14-turn, 1.475-mile (2.374-kilometer) Brooklyn Street Circuit temporary street circuit in Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York in second place in his #4 Spark-Audi alongside race polesitter Alexander Sims of BMW i Andretti Motorsport in his #27 Spark-BMW.

Frijns ended up finishing this race by 3.200 seconds ahead of Sims in second place. He took the lead from Sims on lap 17, and he never looked back, as this pass proved to be the race’s lone lead change. He led the race’s final 20 laps en route to winning it.

Nissan e.dams’ Sebastien Buemi finished the race in third place in his #23 Spark-Nissan after winning yesterday’s race at the track to join Frijns and Sims on the podium.

Envision Virgin Racing’s Sam Bird and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Daniel Abt rounded out the top five by finishing in fourth and fifth place in their #2 Spark-Audi and #66 Spark-Audi, respectively.

Nissan e.dams’ Oliver Rowland finished in sixth place in his #22 Spark-Nissan. DS Techeetah’s Jean-Eric Vergne, who won his second consecutive Formula E championship in this race and helped DS Techeetah win their first ever Formula E team championship, finished in seventh in his #25 Spark-DS Automobiles.

HWA Racelab’s Stoffel Vandoorne, BMW i Andretti Motorsport’s Antonio Felix da Costa, and HWA Racelab’s Gary Paffett rounded out the top 10 by finishing in eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #5 Spark-Venturi, #28 Spark-BMW and #17 Spark-Venturi, respectively.

Panasonic Jaguar Racing’s Mitch Evans and Audi Sport ABT Schaeffler’s Lucas di Grassi both had a chance to win the championship entering this race, and they were running together in sixth and seventh place, respectively, on the final lap before making contact.

Evans ended up finishing in 17th place in his #20 Spark-Jaguar while di Grassi ended up finishing in 18th in his #11 Spark-Audi. but neither driver was on pace to win the championship had they finished the race without this incident. Of the 22 drivers who started this race, 19 finished it. Of the 19 drivers who finished this race, 17 finished on the lead lap.

With the New York City ePrix Race 2 in the books, the 2018-2019 Formula E season is officially complete. The 2019-2020 season, which is set to feature a total of 14 races, is scheduled to get underway on Friday, November 22, 2019 with Ad Diriyah ePrix Race 1 at Riyadh Street Circuit in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.
