Brandon Jones secured the first victory of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career with a victory in the Kansas Lottery 300 at Kansas Speedway.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Brandon Jones was eliminated from 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series playoff contention following the third and final race of the round of 12 of the three-round, seven-race playoffs.

But that didn’t stop him from opening up the round of 8 with his first career Xfinity Series victory at Kansas Speedway in the Kansas Lottery 300, spoiling the party for the eight remaining championship contenders. He took the checkered flag for the first time in what was his 134th start.

Jones started this 200-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Kansas Speedway oval in Kansas City, Kansas in second place in his #19 Toyota, and he won it by 0.272 seconds over Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick in second in his #2 Chevrolet.

Reddick led a pack of four playoff drivers who rounded out the top five, with Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe, JR Motorsports teammates Michael Annett and Justin Allgaier in third, fourth and fifth place in their #98 Ford, #1 Chevrolet and #7 Chevrolet, respectively.

Jeremy Clements Racing’s Jeremy Clements, Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley, GMS Racing’s John Hunter Nemechek, RSS Racing’s Ryan Sieg and Kaulig Racing’s Ross Chastain rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place in their #51 Chevrolet, #11 Chevrolet, #23 Chevrolet, #39 Chevrolet and #10 Chevrolet, respectively.

This race featured 12 lead changes among five drivers. Aside of Jones, who led 10 laps of the race, four other drivers led at least one lap. Briscoe and Annett led laps, as did Stewart-Haas Racing’s Cole Custer and Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell, who finished in 11th and 12th place in their #00 Ford and #20 Toyota, respectively.

Bell started the race from the pole position and won stage one, but it was Custer who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 85 laps led. Custer also won stage two.

It appeared as though the battle for the win was between Briscoe and Bell, with the former leading late. But as the pair approached the lapped car of JD Motorsports’ Garrett Smithley, Smithley cut across Briscoe’s nose, causing contact between Briscoe’s car and Bell’s car. Both cars suffered damage, but only Briscoe was able to make somewhat of a recovery to finish in third place.

Custer and Bell are both round of 8 drivers. JR Motorsports’ Noah Gragson and Team Penske’s Austin Cindric, the only two round of 8 drivers not yet discussed in this article, finished in 13th and 25th place in their #9 Chevrolet and #22 Ford, respectively. Cindric’s race all but ended early on with issues, including but not limited to an incident with Joe Gibbs Racing’s Harrison Burton. He ended up finishing six laps off the lead lap.

At the end of the race, which featured eight caution flag periods, 31 of the 38 drivers who started were left running. Of these 31 drivers, 14 finished on the lead lap.
