Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the 2020 IndyCar season opener has moved several times since the schedule was released last September.

The 2020 IndyCar season was all scheduled to get underway as planned, albeit without fans in attendance due to the coronavirus pandemic, back on Sunday, March 15 on the streets of St. Petersburg, Florida.

But with the teams and drivers at the track, that pandemic ended up causing the series to call off the race.

That led to the next three races on the schedule being called off as well. In fact, one of them had already been axed.

At this point, the focus shifted solely to the month of May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

But as the situation evolved, it became clear that there would be no month of May at the Brickyard this year, and IndyCar owner Roger Penske was forced to postpone the road course race and the Indianapolis 500 as well.

That led to a schedule overhaul involving three cancellations, five postponements and one race moved up by a week to create a 14-race calendar from what was a 17-race calendar.

Another schedule was released, this one a 15-race schedule, a few weeks later, but this involved the cancellations of both races which were scheduled to take place at the Raceway at Belle Isle Park.

And that is how we got to this point, in regard to actually getting the 2020 IndyCar season underway:

Race # – Location – Date
1 – Streets of St. Petersburg – Sunday, March 15, 2020
2 – Barber Motorsports Park – Sunday, April 5, 2020
3 – Streets of Long Beach – Sunday, April 19, 2020
4 – Circuit of the Americas – Sunday, April 26, 2020
5 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway (road course) – Saturday, May 9, 2020
6 – Indianapolis Motor Speedway (Indy 500) – Sunday, May 24, 2020

8 – The Raceway at Belle Isle Park – Sunday, May 31, 2020

As of now, the season is scheduled to get underway on Saturday, June 6 with what was scheduled to be the ninth race of the season at Texas Motor Speedway.

The season opener hasn’t been held in June since the 1909 AAA Championship Car season when three races were held in Portland, Oregon on Saturday, June 12.
