NASCAR: 5 most disappointing teams so far in 2020
By Konner Metz
The 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season has gone through quite the struggle with the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent schedule makeover. However, with 19 of 26 regular season races complete, the season is beginning to take shape. Which teams have been the most disappointing?
The 19 races that have been contested so far throughout the 2020 NASCAR Cup Series season have been won by 10 unique drivers and five teams.
Despite Kyle Busch lacking speed and results, Joe Gibbs Racing continue to be one of the premier organizations at the top level of NASCAR. Denny Hamlin, who has five wins, has led the four-car team’s efforts in achieving six wins, 39 top 10 finishes and an average ranking of 9.0 in the points standings.
Similarly, Stewart-Haas-Racing have been carried by one driver, Kevin Harvick. While Harvick leads the standings and has won four races, teammate Aric Almirola has been on fire over the past two months, reeling off eight consecutive top 10 finishes, and rookie Cole Custer grabbed his first career win at Kentucky Speedway.
Neither organization holds a candle to Team Penske’s 2020 achievements, however. Their three drivers sit in second, third and sixth place in the standings and have combined for a series-high 1,543 laps led. Their Fords may not be the fastest on raw pace, but they have consistently posted stout results throughout the first half of the year.
While these three powerhouse teams have been leading laps, winning stages and accruing points, other teams have been significantly underachieving based on their expectations coming into the year.
Let’s take a look at five organizations that have failed to deliver over the season’s first 19 events as we enter the final month of the regular season.
