If Jimmie Johnson makes the move to IndyCar to run a part-time schedule, where might he end up? Here are five possible landing spots.
Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson has not been quiet about his desire to compete in IndyCar after retiring from full-time Cup Series competition.
The 44-year-old El Cajon, California native announced in November that the 2020 season would be his final season behind the wheel of the #48 Chevrolet, and he has reiterated his desire to compete in IndyCar road course races, perhaps even in the Indianapolis 500, given the sport’s recent safety improvements.
Johnson attended IndyCar preseason testing and competed in the IndyCar iRacing Challenge, the virtual replacement for American’s top open-wheel racing series during the coronavirus pandemic, before finally getting the opportunity to test a car at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course in late July.
That test only strengthened Johnson’s desire to compete in a real race.
While 2020 has posed many challenges for Johnson that have led to him questioning his decision to retire and many fans have urged him to come back for another year, he has since confirmed that he has no plans to return to NASCAR next year.
