Possible first-time NASCAR Cup Series winners: #4 – Matt DiBenedetto

Matt DiBenedetto is currently in his seventh NASCAR Cup Series season and his second with Wood Brothers Racing, which have a technical alliance with Team Penske.

This is a contract year for DiBenedetto, with Austin Cindric set to move up to the Cup Series and take his spot behind the wheel of the #21 Ford next season. With free agency looming, now would be an opportune time for DiBenedetto to get his first career win. He recorded three top five finishes, 11 top 10 finishes and an average finish of 14.8 last season.

Half of DiBenedetto’s six career top five finishes are runner-up finishes and have come at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway, which are two tracks where he could earn his first victory. He has two top five finishes and an average finish of 11.5 in four races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway since 2019, when he raced for Leavine Family Racing.

Both of those top five finishes were runner-up finishes last season, proving that he can be a serious contender there in the #21 Ford. Overall, his average finish of 18.6 in eight starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is his best average finish at any track where he has more than three starts.

At Bristol Motor Speedway, DiBenedetto has one top five finish and an average finish of 16.0 in four races since 2019. That top five finish was a runner-up finish in 2019, when he led 93 laps in the summer race before being passed by Denny Hamlin with 12 laps to go.

Overall, his average finish of 19.1 in 12 starts at Bristol Motor Speedway falls right behind Las Vegas Motor Speedway in that category.
