Indy 500: How much money did Helio Castroneves win?
By Asher Fair
Helio Castroneves’ Indy 500 win on Sunday netted him nearly a half-million more dollars than Takuma Sato’s victory in last August’s running of the race.
Helio Castroneves joined an exclusive club by winning the 105th running of the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on Sunday, as he became just the fourth driver to win the race on four occasions.
Castroneves, who won the race in 2001, 2002 and 2009 driving for Team Penske, took Meyer Shank Racing to victory lane for the first time in an IndyCar race in what was only his first start behind the wheel of the #06 Honda.
Only three other drivers had ever won the race on four occasions: A.J. Foyt (1961, 1964, 1967 and 1977), Al Unser (1970, 1971, 1978 and 1987), and Rick Mears (1979, 1984, 1988 and 1991).
In addition to making history in a way history hadn’t been made in three decades, Castroneves also collected quite a bit of money for his efforts.

Castroneves collected more than 20% of a total purse of $8,854,565 that IndyCar and Indianapolis Motor Speedway handed out for Sunday’s 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) oval in Speedway, Indiana, winning $1,828,305 of that money.
That total is nearly a half-million more dollars than Takuma Sato secured by winning the 104th running of the race last August ($1,370,500), a total that was the lowest for an Indy 500 winner since Gil de Ferran took the checkered flag to win $1,353,265 in 2003.
Throughout the rest of the 33-driver field, winnings ranged from $100,305 for one-off drivers Marco Andretti (19th place), Simona de Silvestro (31st) and Stefan Wilson (33rd) to $649,305 for race runner-up Alex Palou.
Here is the full finishing order of Sunday’s race, plus the winnings for each driver, determined by a combination of several factors.
