Following Saturday’s second ever Formula 1 sprint qualifying race, the starting lineup for Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix is set.

For the second time in the 2021 Formula 1 season — and all-time — the starting lineup for a Grand Prix was set by a sprint qualifying race and not the traditional three-round, knockout qualifying format.

This format was used for the first time at Silverstone Circuit for the British Grand Prix back in mid-July, and it returned for this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.

This starting lineup for the sprint qualifying race was set by the traditional three-round, knockout qualifying format instead, and that race took place earlier today.

Where is the Italian Grand Prix?

The Italian Grand Prix is contested at the 11-turn, 3.6-mile (5.794-kilometer) Autodromo Nazionale di Monza road course in Monza, Italy. This race is a 53-lap race.

Who is on pole for Monza?

It was Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who took the pole position for the 53-lap main event by finishing in second place in Saturday’s 18-lap sprint race, giving him seven in the last eight races.

Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas won this race after leading every lap from the pole position, but because of an engine penalty, he is set to start at the back of the grid.

Bottas still scored three points by winning the sprint race. Verstappen scored two and third place finisher Daniel Ricciardo, who is set to start on the front row in second alongside Verstappen tomorrow, scored one.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton started the sprint race on the front row but had a dreadful start. He finished in fifth place and is set to start on the second row in fourth alongside McLaren’s Lando Norris in third tomorrow.

Monza betting prediction

A very interesting sprint qualifying race set up some fairly unique odds for the Italian Grand Prix, compared to many other Formula 1 races.

Of course, the two favorites are still Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, but not in the order that many expected at what looked to be a Mercedes stronghold, with the former set to start from the pole position and Hamilton set to start outside the top three despite being the higher starting of the two Mercedes drivers.

Given the challenges presented by the DRS train when it comes to passing, as we saw last season as the Mercedes drivers tried to pick their way back through the field after falling outside of the lead pack, this is one scenario where Hamilton may not actually be worth the gamble at +225.

And Valtteri Bottas certainly isn’t worth it either, even at +2500, considering the fact that he is set to start on the back row.

If you want to pick somebody other than Verstappen at -130, don’t ignore the McLaren teammates: Lando Norris at +900 and Daniel Ricciardo at +1100.

Both are set to start inside the top three, and with McLaren having been consistent frontrunners over the last two seasons and seemingly on the cusp of a breakthrough, these odds are too good to pass up, especially at a track that has seen two consecutive non Red Bull/Mercedes winners.
