The starting lineup for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix is set after the third ever Formula 1 sprint qualifying race. Who is on pole?

For the third and final time in the 2021 Formula 1 season, a sprint qualifying race, not a traditional three-round knockout qualifying session, set the starting lineup for a Grand Prix, this time for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

The starting lineup for this afternoon’s sprint qualifying race was set by a traditional qualifying session yesterday afternoon. Now the starting lineup for the 19th race on the 22-race schedule is set.

Where is the Sao Paulo Grand Prix?

The Sao Paulo Grand Prix is a 71-lap event contested at the 15-turn, 2.677-mile (4.308-kilometer) Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace road course in Sao Paulo, Brazil. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen won this race when it was most recently contested in 2019, as the 2020 Brazilian Grand Prix was canceled as a result of COVID-19-related restrictions.

Who is on pole in Sao Paulo?

By winning the 24-lap sprint qualifying race this afternoon, Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas took the pole position for Sunday’s Sao Paulo Grand Prix.

Set to join him on the front row for the 71-lap main event is Verstappen, who finished today’s race in second place, 1.170 seconds behind Bottas after losing the lead from the pole position at the start.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton, who originally took the pole position, was forced to start in last as a result of a DRS technical infringement, which led to a disqualification of his qualifying speed from yesterday.

He rallied to finish in fifth place, but he is set to start the race in 10th due to a five-place grid drop after Mercedes changed the engine in his car ahead of the race weekend.

Sao Paulo betting prediction

As long as he doesn’t have a disastrous start, or even if his start is as bad as it was earlier today, Verstappen should still be considered the favorite to win the race.

After dropping from first to third place in the sprint qualifying race, he showed the pace to run down Bottas, despite not being able to make the pass for the win. In a full-length race with pit stops, that scenario would generally play in his favor.

In fact, Bottas isn’t even listed as the second favorite; Hamilton is, despite fact that he is set to start in 10th place. The fact that he was able to make up 15 spots before 24 laps were up in today’s sprint qualifying race should bode well for him, though a win will still be quite challenging to pull off.

But don’t rule it out. Verstappen has yet to finish a race for which the starting lineup was set via a sprint qualifying race, and Hamilton was involved in both of his race-ending incidents, despite still managing to win one of those races.

Add to that the fact that Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace is a track that can — and usually does — produce quite chaotic racing and unpredictable results.

So if you’re looking for a good upset pick, look no further than Carlos Sainz Jr. at +4000. Sainz has finished as high as second place this season and is set to start in third. He was able to keep Sergio Perez at bay on Saturday despite being quickly passed by Verstappen for second after Verstappen fell back to spots at the start.

Notably, his first career podium finish came at this very track the last time Formula 1 raced here in 2019. He finished in third place — and that came after he started in 20th (last). His +475 odds for a podium finish are worth noting here.

As for another good upset pick, Pierre Gasly at +10000 could be a good one. Gasly is set to start in seventh place at a track where he finished in second in 2019 despite going a lap down earlier on.

He has shown a consistent ability to capitalize on races that see unpredictable outcomes as well, with his win in last year’s Italian Grand Prix highlighting that ability. His odds for a podium finish are +600.
