NASCAR: Field expansion continues impressive growth
By Cade Stout
Intrigue around the NASCAR Xfinity Series continues as the sanctioning body is expanding the field size from 36 to 38 for the 2022 season.
Over the last several years, the NASCAR Xfinity Series has provided great racing, memorable moments, and compelling storylines. Its young and aggressive drivers behind the wheel of 750-horsepower cars have put on a great show.
The series has attracted more fans, higher television ratings, and has often been the talk of NASCAR social media after race weekends.
It is expected that upwards of 50 cars could show up for the first race at the Daytona International Speedway in two weeks.
With strong interest from owners, NASCAR has decided to expand the field from 36 to 38 cars for the 2022 season.
In any motorsport, a larger field is a sign of good health since the quality of the field improves when teams must work to qualify.
The competitiveness of the Xfinity Series looks to be improving. The departure of big teams such as Team Penske from the series opens the door for other teams to rise, like how Kaulig Racing have in the last five years.
There are interesting narratives to follow up and down the grid. The powerhouse teams will continue to battle for wins and the championship as in years past, but several new and/or expanding teams will make the middle of the pack just as competitive.
The introduction of the Next Gen car in the Cup Series likely is having an impact on the Xfinity Series car count in the near-term. Supply shortages, high upfront costs and high charter costs in Cup have likely attracted teams towards the lower series as an alternative.
Give credit to NASCAR and the Xfinity Series for putting together an exciting product for fans and a model that is enticing to owners, drivers, and sponsors.
Before the green flag drops on Saturday, February 19, NASCAR Xfinity Series qualifying for the season-opening Beef. It’s What’s For Dinner. 300 Daytona International Speedway will be a compelling storyline to watch.
