A Saturday night qualifying session set the starting lineups for the heat races for the Busch Light Clash, the first ever NASCAR Cup Series race at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

A total of 36 NASCAR Cup Series drivers made a two-lap qualifying run on Saturday evening around the quarter-mile purpose-built track inside Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum ahead of Sunday’s Busch Light Clash.

The better of each driver’s two laps was used to determine the starting lineups for Sunday afternoon’s four 25-lap heat races, which are each set to include nine drivers.

The top four drivers in each heat race advance to the 150-lap main event, while the remaining 20 drivers get sent to one of the two 50-lap last-chance qualifying races. Each of these two races will send three more drivers into the main event.

One more driver will be added afterward: the highest finisher in the 2021 standings among those not yet qualified.

A full rundown of the new format can be found here.

The fastest four qualifiers from Saturday night are set to start their respective heat races from the pole position. Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch led all drivers with a top lap speed of 65.478 miles per hour (13.735 seconds) around the tight, low-banked oval behind the wheel of this #18 Toyota, earning him the pole position for the first heat race.

Other heat race polesitters include Richard Childress Racing’s Tyler Reddick, Kaulig Racing’s Justin Haley, and Team Penske’s Joey Logano.
