One car number that was initially confirmed for the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season will not be run, thanks to a merger between two teams.

Early in the offseason between the 2021 and 2022 NASCAR Cup Series seasons, it was confirmed that GMS Racing, which had never competed in a race at NASCAR’s top level, and Richard Petty Motorsports would be merging to former Petty GMS Motorsports, with GMS Racing purchasing Richard Petty Motorsports’ two charters.

The charter that had been used to run the #43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet for Erik Jones is set to be used to run the same car for the same driver.

Meanwhile, the Richard Petty Motorsports charter that had been used to run the #51 Rick Ware Racing car, officially the Petty Ware Racing car, was acquired by GMS Racing as well, and that car is set to be used to run their second entry.

That entry is the #42 Chevrolet, and it is set to be driven by Ty Dillon.

But before this whole deal went down, GMS Racing, which did not have any charters, still had plans to race with Dillon during the 2022 season. He was slated to drive the #94 Chevrolet throughout the upcoming 36-race campaign.

However, due to the number 42’s availability following Trackhouse Racing Team’s purchase of Chip Ganassi Racing, plus its deep ties to the Petty family, the number 94 was completely abandoned for 2022.

The only time we ever got to see it was in Next Gen testing before the 2021 season ended and right after the 2021 season ended.
