The first road course race of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season is scheduled to take place on Sunday at Circuit of the Americas (COTA).

The sixth venue on the 36-race 2022 NASCAR Cup Series schedule is the first of six road course races: Circuit of the Americas (COTA).

Sunday afternoon’s EchoPark Texas Grand Prix is scheduled to be a 68-lap race around the 20-turn, 3.427-mile (5.515-kilometer) road course in Austin, Texas.

Last year’s race, which was contested in late May and shortened to 54 laps due to rain, was the first ever Cup Series race at COTA. Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott was the winner.

The track was one of very few tracks to host a qualifying session last year.

This year, the Cup Series qualifying format is a bit different, and those differences aren’t limited to the oval races.

While the road course qualifying format still isn’t a single-car, single-lap format, the drivers are still split up until two groups based on the results of the previous race.

NOTE: For the oval races, the exact order is determined by the qualifying order formula.

The top five drivers from each group advance to the second round, and those 10 drivers then battle for the pole position, setting the top 10 positions in the starting lineup. The rest of the lineup is set by the results of the first round.
