NASCAR: Another major postponement announced
By Asher Fair
Yet again, the court date for NASCAR Growth and Engagement Advisor and New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara was pushed back.
The hearing date for NASCAR Growth and Engagement Advisor and New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara, plus the three other individuals arrested in connection with a disturbing incident which took place back on Saturday, February 5 at a Las Vegas nightclub, had been scheduled for Monday, April 25.
However, on April 25 itself, Justice of the Peace Harmony Letizia rescheduled the hearing for Monday, August 1.
It marks yet another significant postponement stemming from the fact that the attorneys for Kamara and the three other individuals, including Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons, Percy Harris, and Darrin Young, have requested more time to review evidence turned over by prosecutors.
The incident in question took place the night before the NFL Pro Bowl at Allegiant Stadium.
Kamara was arrested after the Pro Bowl for “battery causing substantial bodily harm and conspiracy to commit battery”. He was released on $5,000 bond the next day, and the hearing was scheduled for Tuesday, March 8 before its postponement to April 25.
In Nevada, battery resulting in substantial bodily harm is a felony, meaning that if Kamara is convicted, he would be required to pay a $10,000 fine and could face between one and five years in prison.
However, nearly three months later, NASCAR has interestingly not yet commented about Kamara’s arrest.
Kamara was brought on as their first ever Growth and Engagement Advisor last June. The role was formed with him in mind, given his newfound interest in the sport and what NASCAR believed he could do and how they believed he could use his platform to continue its growth.
He became a NASCAR fan in 2020 after several drivers, particularly his close friend Bubba Wallace, participated in various acts of racial justice. Wallace was responsible for getting NASCAR to ban the Confederate battle flag from race tracks, and he also ran a Black Lives Matter-themed car at Martinsville Speedway.
In February 2021, Kamara went from fan to sponsor when his juice and smoothie chain, The Big Squeezy, served as the primary sponsor of Ryan Vargas’s car during the Xfinity Series race at the Daytona Internatioanl Speedway road course.
Whether his hearing actually happens on August 1 remains to be seen, just as it remains to be seen whether NASCAR will have anything to say about the matter. Notably, the 2022 NFL season is scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 8.
