Due to inclement weather, NASCAR has made the decision to postpone the remainder of Sunday’s Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway.

For the first time in the 2022 season, NASCAR has made the decision to postpone a Cup Series race as a result of inclement weather.

This decision comes after Sunday afternoon’s DuraMAX Drydene 400 presented by RelaDyne was suspended by a red flag for rain after 78 of 400 scheduled laps around the four-turn, 1.0-mile (1.609-kilometer) high-banked Dover Motor Speedway oval in Dover, Delaware.

For the race, which began as scheduled shortly after 3:00 p.m. ET, to be classified as an official race, it must reach either the end of the second stage or the halfway mark, whichever comes soon.

With stage two ending after lap 250, this means that the race would become official after the halfway mark (lap 200).

Sunday’s race didn’t even make it to the end of stage one (lap 120).

Two of the last three spring races at the “Monster Mile” have now been pushed back to Monday as a result of rain, and three of the last four spring races at the track have been postponed. Four of the last five have been affected by weather.

Unlike today’s event, the May 2018 race was halted, but it resumed later on Sunday evening. Also unlike today’s event, the May 2019 race at the track never actually got started before it was postponed to Monday. The May 2020 race was one of several races pushed back due to COVID-19-related restrictions, and it didn’t take place until late August.

NASCAR has seen races affected by bad weather this year, most notably two weeks ago when the dirt race at Bristol Motor Speedway was halted due to rain. But that race was resumed and finished on its initially scheduled race day.
