Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Sonoma Raceway, the Toyota/Save Mart 350.

The NASCAR Cup Series is set for the second of six road course races on the 36-race 2022 schedule this Sunday afternoon at Sonoma Raceway.

Unlike in 2019 and 2021, the 12-turn, 1.99-mile (3.203-kilometer) layout of the Sonoma, California road course is set to be used for this year’s Toyota/Save Mart 350.

This layout hasn’t been used since 2018, as the full 12-turn, 2.52-mile (4.056-kilometer) layout was used the last two times the Cup Series raced at the venue.

As a result, this year’s race is a 110-lap race as opposed to a 90-lap race.

The qualifying format that is set to be used for this race is the same format that was used for the season’s first road course race at Circuit of the Americas in late March.

The drivers are split up into two groups based on the results of last Sunday afternoon’s race at World Wide Technology Raceway at Gateway, and the top five drivers in each group advance to the second round to battle for the pole position.

This is slightly different than this year’s oval qualifying format in that it is not a single-car qualifying session, and drivers are allowed to run more than one lap.

Second round speeds determine the top 10 in the starting lineup, and first round speeds, irrespective of group, determine the remainder of the starting lineup outside of the top 10.
