Keep tabs on Saturday afternoon’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the Quaker State 400.

The Quaker State 400 is scheduled to kick off the second half of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season at Atlanta Motor Speedway this Sunday afternoon.

The four-turn, 1.54-mile (2.478-kilometer) high-banked oval in Hampton, Georgia is the first track on the schedule to host a second race, as it hosted the season’s fifth race back in March.

Qualifying was rained out for that race, so the qualifying session there this afternoon is set to be the first at the track since February 2019. Qualifying was canceled for most of the 2020 and 2021 seasons, and the three races at Atlanta Motor Speedway were among those for which it did not take place.

Today’s single-car qualifying session is also set to be the first at the track since the repave, which took place between the race there last July and the race there back in March.

Unlike for most oval races, the 36 drivers on the entry list are not split up into two groups based on the results of the most recent race, as this race is considered a superspeedway race.

The qualifying order is determined by the formula which, in the absence of qualifying, had been used to set the starting lineups.

Each driver gets one lap in the opening round, and the fastest 10 drivers advance to the second round to battle for the pole position. The speeds from the second round determine the full top 10, and the speeds from the first round determine the rest of the starting lineup.

UPDATE: Qualifying for Sunday’s race has also been rained out. The starting lineup has been determined by the formula.
