NASCAR: Notable omission from Indianapolis entry list
By Asher Fair
The entry list for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course was revealed, and with one key omission.
The 22nd race of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series season is set to take place this Sunday afternoon at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, marking the second ever appearance of the track’s road course layout on the Cup Series schedule.
This race, the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, is scheduled to be an 82-lap race around the 13-turn, 2.439-mile (3.925-kilometer) road course in Speedway, Indiana, and a total of 38 cars are slated to compete in it.
In addition to the 36 chartered entries, which are guaranteed a spot in each of the 36 races on the calendar, there are two non-chartered entries set to compete this weekend.
Those two entries are the two Team Hezerberg powered by Reaume Brothers entries, the #26 Toyota and the #27 Ford. Daniil Kvyat is set to make his Cup Series debut behind the wheel of the former, and Loris Hezemans is set to return for another start behind the wheel of the latter.
But there is one significant non-chartered entry missing from the entry list, and that is the #79 Chevrolet.
This entry is an entry that was announced by Team Stange Racing for eight races earlier this year. The team were to have made their Cup Series debut with Tarso Marques behind the wheel of the car at Road America earlier this month, but that did not happen.
However, even after missing this race, their plan was still to compete in each of the remaining seven races on their initial 2022 schedule. Now they will not compete in at least the first of those seven events.
The other six races they announced as a part of their plan for 2022 include the race at Watkins Glen International on Sunday, August 21 and the race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday, August 27 to wrap up the regular season.
Their four planned playoff races include the race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval on Sunday, October 9, the race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday, October 16, the race at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday, October 23, and the race at Phoenix Raceway on Sunday, November 6 to wrap up the season.
Time will tell if Team Stange Racing and Marques get the opportunity to make their Cup Series debuts before the season ends.
