Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard.

The NASCAR Cup Series is back to road course racing this weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course, a track which was added to the schedule in 2021 after the traditional Brickyard 400 on the oval track was axed after 2020.

This Sunday’s race, the Verizon 200 at the Brickyard, is the 22nd overall race on the 36-race 2022 schedule, and it is the fourth of six road course races. This race is scheduled to be an 82-lap race around the 13-turn, 2.439-mile (3.925-kilometer) road course in Speedway, Indiana.

Qualifying for this race is set to be done the same way qualifying was done for the season’s first three road course races at Circuit of the Americas, Sonoma Raceway, and Road America.

Drivers are split up into two groups, based on the results of the most recent race at Pocono Raceway, and the qualifying session is a true group qualifying session in which drivers can make multiple attempts.

The fastest five drivers in the first round’s first group advance to the second round, as do the fastest five drivers of first round’s second group.

In the second round, the remaining 10 drivers battle for the pole position. This round sets the top 10 in the starting lineup. The rest of the lineup is set based on lap times from the first round, regardless of which group each driver was in.
