Ferrari’s worst moments of 2022: No. 3 – Hard tires in Hungary

Coming off of a poor result in France, Ferrari desperately needed a strong result in the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Mercedes proved to be a threat when George Russell swiped pole position from Carlos Sainz Jr. in the final moments of qualifying, while Red Bull had the tough task of expanding their lead in the constructor standings with Max Verstappen starting 10th and Sergio Perez starting 11th.

Charles Leclerc once again had a strong start to the race, and he caused Ferrari fans around the world to rejoice after a breathtaking overtake of George Russell on lap 31 to move into the lead. Sainz stayed competitive for a podium result, but slow pit stops during the race were the ultimate downfall of his chances.

Interestingly, Leclerc was called in to pit for his second stop of the race at lap 40, and he was sent out on hard tires. Ferrari were seemingly unaware of the struggles exhibited by other cars on the hard tires, and Leclerc struggled mightily.

Verstappen overtook Leclerc on the following lap, and even after Leclerc retook the position when Verstappen did a 360-degree spin, he remained vulnerable. Verstappen ended up retaking third on lap 45, and Leclerc ended up pitting for a third time on lap 55 to switch tires.

The struggles of the Ferrari strategy seemingly irritated team principal Mattia Binotto, who was shown leaving the pit wall and disappearing into the back of the paddock. The moment was shared widely on social media, prompting outrage from Ferrari fans.

Ferrari now crawl into the summer break with very little momentum, and the rumors on potential personnel changes have started brewing.
