Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff-opening Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

The Cook Out Southern 500 is scheduled to open up the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs this Sunday night at Darlington Raceway, and qualifying for the race is scheduled to take place this afternoon.

Aside from the qualifying session for last year’s season finale at Phoenix Raceway, this is the first qualifying session for a playoff race since the 2019 season, as qualifying was largely canceled during the 2020 and 2021 seasons.

As a result, it is the first playoff race set to utilize the new qualifying format. It is a single-car qualifying session, and drivers are split up into two groups based on the results of the most recent race at Daytona International Speedway.

The order is determined by the qualifying formula (full breakdown here), though the playoff drivers (and playoff entries, in the case of 23XI Racing’s Bubba Wallace) are all guaranteed to qualify at the end of their respective groups.

Each driver is set to make a single-lap qualifying attempt, and the fastest five drivers from each group are set to advance to the second round, which also utilizes a single-car format.

Those 10 drivers are then set to make another single-lap qualifying attempt, and those attempts will determine the top 10 in the starting lineup.

The remainder of the starting lineup will be determined by the first round speeds, regardless of the group in which they were recorded.

Follow along with our live qualifying updates for the 2022 Cook Out Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.
