Sergio Perez can be mathematically eliminated from winning the 2022 Formula 1 world championship in the Singapore Grand Prix.

Following the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, there are five drivers who still mathematically have a chance to win the 2022 Formula 1 world championship, and Red Bull’s Sergio Perez, who sits in third place in the driver standings through 16 of 22 races on the schedule, is one of them.

But after a sixth place finish in this 53-lap race around the 11-turn, 3.6-mile (5.794-kilometer) road course in Monza, Italy, Perez sits 125 points behind points leader and teammate Max Verstappen.

As a result, Perez could be eliminated as early as the next race on the schedule, which is the Singapore Grand Prix at Marina Bay Street Circuit this Sunday, October 2.

There are 164 points on the table for each driver over the course of the season’s final six races.

Race winners are awarded 25 points, and one point is on the table for the driver who runs the race’s fastest lap. There is also one more sprint qualifying race, and the winner of that scores eight points.

Following the upcoming 61-lap race around the 23-turn, 3.146-mile (5.063-kilometer) temporary street circuit in Marina Bay, Singapore, there will be just 138 points left on the table for each driver.

Perez owns one win this year, having won the Monaco Grand Prix, while Verstappen owns 11, so even if Perez wins each of the remaining six races on the schedule, Verstappen owns the tiebreaker.

Therefore, if Perez sits more than 137 points behind Verstappen once the season’s 17th race concludes, he will be eliminated from title contention.

Perez isn’t the only driver facing elimination in this race. In fact, Verstappen can clinch the title in it. The other three other drivers still mathematically eligible to win the title are Ferrari teammates Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz Jr. and Mercedes’ George Russell, and they can also find themselves more than 137 points behind Verstappen after the Singapore Grand Prix.

Verstappen has clinched the tiebreaker over each of those three drivers as well. Leclerc leads the trio with three wins and can therefore only earn up to nine by the time the season ends.

Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton was officially eliminated after the Italian Grand Prix.
