Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series playoff race at Talladega Superspeedway.

The second race of the round of 12 of the 2022 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, the YellaWood 500, is scheduled to take place on Sunday afternoon at Talladega Superspeedway.

The four-turn, 2.66-mile (4.281-kilometer) high-banked Lincoln, Alabama oval also hosted a race back in April, one which was won by Trackhouse Racing Team’s Ross Chastain.

Interestingly, none of the winners of the first four playoff races have won to advance themselves to the next round. The three round of 16 races were all won by non-playoff drivers, and the round of 12 opener was won by a driver who had been eliminated in the round of 16. So nobody is locked into the round of 8 yet.

Qualifying for Sunday’s 188-lap race is set to utilize the same format that was used for the April race at the track. Unlike the qualifying sessions for most races, drivers are not split up into groups at superspeedways. It is a single-car qualifying session, and each driver makes a single-lap qualifying attempt.

The qualifying order is determined by the qualifying formula (see here), though the drivers and teams still eligible to win the championship are guaranteed to qualify at the back end of the order.

The fastest 10 drivers then move on to the second round, which is also a single-car round in which each driver makes another single-lap attempt. Second round speeds determine the top 10 in the starting lineup, and first round speeds determine the rest.

Follow along with our live qualifying updates for the YellaWood 500.
