Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series round of 8 playoff race at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

It has been more than a year and a half, but the NASCAR Cup Series is back at Homestead-Miami Speedway this weekend for the second of three races in the round of 8 of the playoffs.

This Sunday afternoon’s 267-lap Dixie Vodka 400 is set to be the first race at the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Homestead, Florida oval since February 2021, when Hendrick Motorsports’ William Byron took the checkered flag. Byron is still in contention to win this year’s championship as one of the eight drivers in the round of 8.

Homestead-Miami Speedway had been the host of the season finale prior to 2020, when it was shifted to the regular season. That regular season shift lasted just two seasons, and although the track hasn’t returned as the host of the Championship 4, it is back in the postseason. The change was one of several changes made to the playoff schedule for 2022.

Qualifying for Sunday afternoon’s race is set to utilize the same format that most other oval races have used throughout the 2022 season. The qualifying groups were determined by the results of the most recent race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, and the qualifying formula (see here) determined the qualifying order.

In regard to the formula, however, the remaining playoff contenders were not factored in until the non-playoff contenders were listed.

The session is a single-lap, single-car session, with the fastest five drivers in each of two first round groups advancing to the second round. Speeds from the second round determine the top 10 in the starting lineup, and speeds from the opening round determine the rest of the lineup, regardless of the group in which they were set.
