Keep tabs on Saturday’s qualifying session for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway.

The 2022 NASCAR Cup Series championship is set to be decided in this Sunday afternoon’s Championship 4 race at Phoenix Raceway.

There are four drivers eligible to win the championship heading into this 312-lap race around the four-turn, 1.058-mile (1.703-kilometer) Avondale, Arizona oval, and the highest finisher among them is slated to be crowned champion.

Those four drivers are Team Penske’s Joey Logano, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Christopher Bell, Trackhouse Racing Team’s Ross Chastain, and Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott.

Logano, the 2018 champion, is a two-time winner at Phoenix Raceway (November 2016 and March 2020), and Elliott, the 2020 champion, won there in November 2020 to secure his first title.

In each of the first eight seasons of the Championship 4, the champion has been the winner of the season finale.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Kyle Larson won last year’s championship with a Championship 4 victory at Phoenix Raceway, but he was eliminated in this year’s round of 12. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Chase Briscoe, who was eliminated in the round of 8, won the race at Phoenix Raceway back in March.

Qualifying groups for Sunday’s season finale were determined by the results of the most recent race at Martinsville Speedway, and the order was solidified by the qualifying formula, which you can read more about here.

The remaining four championship contenders were not factored into that formula until all of the non-championship contenders were taken care of.

The qualifying session is a single-car, single-lap session in which the top five drivers in each of two groups in the opening round advance to the second round to battle for the pole position. Round two speeds determine the top 10 in the starting lineup, while the remainder of the lineup is based on round one speeds, irrespective of group.
