There are now 42 cars entered into the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season-opening Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway, ensuring that multiple drivers will fail to qualify for the race.

The start of the 2023 NASCAR Cup Series season is right around the corner, as the 65th annual Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway is now less than a week and a half away.

The front row for the 200-lap race around the four-turn, 2.5-mile (4.023-kilometer) high-banked Daytona Beach, Florida oval is set to be solidified by the single-car qualifying session on Wednesday, February 15 (Fox Sports 1, 8:15 p.m. ET).

The full starting lineup is set to be determined by the Bluegreen Vacations Duels on Thursday, February 16 (Fox Sports 1, 7:00 p.m. ET).

Because there are more than 40 cars on the entry list, the single-car qualifying session and Bluegreen Vacations Duels will also determine which non-chartered entries qualify and fail to qualify for the race.

The field is capped at 40 cars, and the 36 chartered cars are all locked in, leaving just four spots open for non-chartered entries. There are already six non-chartered cars on the entry list, and more could follow.

The six confirmed non-chartered NASCAR Cup Series entries for this year’s Daytona 500 are as follows.

  • No. 13 Kaulig Racing Chevrolet – Chandler Smith
  • No. 36 Front Row Motorsports Ford – Zane Smith
  • No. 50 The Money Team Racing Chevrolet – Conor Daly
  • No. 62 Beard Motorsports Chevrolet – Austin Hill
  • No. 67 23XI Racing Toyota – Travis Pastrana
  • No. 84 Legacy Motor Club – Jimmie Johnson

The fastest two non-chartered entries in the single-car qualifying session lock into the field, and then the non-chartered entries which finish highest in their respective Duel races secure the remaining two spots.

If a non-chartered entry locks in twice, per se, the spot earned in the single-car qualifying session then goes to the next quickest qualifier (among the non-chartered entries), not necessarily the next highest finisher in whichever Duel race that driver was in.
