Possible new NASCAR Cup Series track: No. 1 – Iowa Speedway

Track description: 0.894-mile oval

From 2009 to 2019, both the NASCAR Xfinity Series and Truck Series held events at Iowa Speedway. These events often were met with positive reception and became a favorite among drivers and fans.

The track provided the “short track racing” feel that comes with sub-1-mile tracks, but thanks to wider turns and banking, the track provides multi-groove racing that is generally seen at larger tracks. This perfect storm of attributes would make the track a unique one on the Cup Series schedule with no true comparison.

Along with the Xfinity Series and Truck Series, IndyCar has also run races at the track since the track opened in 2007. Much like in NASCAR, the reception has been positive among drivers and fans, and the track now hosts an IndyCar doubleheader.

However, in midst of the COVID-19-related schedule changes, NASCAR announced that both the Xfinity Series and Truck Series would not race at Iowa in 2020, and neither series has returned.

Since the track was removed from the schedule, speculation has continued regarding the track’s future in NASCAR. Many believe a return is on the horizon, and 2024 may finally be the year that one or more of NASCAR’s top three series returns to Iowa Speedway.

Before NASCAR left the track in 2020, the track had been trying to land a Cup date, but to no avail. Could 2024 finally be the year that NASCAR not only returns to Iowa Speedway, but also gets the Cup Series race they had been longing for?

It is certainly possible, and it would undoubtedly be a hit with drivers and fans alike.
