Carl Edwards is set to be in the Fox Sports broadcast booth for Sunday afternoon’s NASCAR Cup Series throwback race at Darlington Raceway.

It’s probably not the most desired “return” situation that NASCAR Cup Series fans had in mind, but Carl Edwards is indeed set to be back at the track this weekend.

The fan-favorite is set to join the Fox Sports broadcast booth for this coming Sunday afternoon’s Goodyear 400 throwback race at Darlington Raceway.

The 2015 Southern 500 winner retired unexpectedly after the 2016 season, and despite probably dozens of rumors about his possible “return” over the last six and a half years, he has retained his status as an ex-NASCAR driver.

But that won’t keep him from joining lead announcer Mike Joy and fellow former driver Clint Bowyer in the booth for Sunday’s 293-lap race around “The Track Too Tough to Tame”, a four-turn, 1.366-mile (2.198-kilometer) oval in Darlington, South Carolina.

Fox has changed up the NASCAR Cup Series broadcast booth on almost a weekly basis since Jeff Gordon’s departure after their portion of the 2021 schedule.

They have kept the third seat open for different guest analysts from race to race. For last year’s throwback race, they had multiple individuals join the full-time duo, and they have taken the same approach again in 2023.

Edwards is set to be in the booth along with 1988 Cup Series champion Bill Elliott during stages two and three of Sunday’s race. Set to join Joy and Bowyer during stage one are seven-time champion Richard Petty and his son Kyle Petty.

Make note of the fact that, like the last two races, Sunday’s race is set to be broadcast live on Fox Sports 1 instead of regular Fox.

The most recent NASCAR driver return rumor related to Edwards emerged after he said that he was planning to visit Trackhouse Racing Team’s shop.

The Justin Marks and Pitbull-owned team, of course, run a third car in select races as a part of their PROJECT91 initiative. But Edwards quickly realized the can of worms he opened up by mentioning his desire to visit the team’s shop and shot down that rumor before it really got started.
