While no driver has ever won both the Brickyard 400 and the Indy 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, two drivers have run both in recent years, including one in the same season.
Two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson attempted the Memorial Day Double (Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600) in both 2024 and 2025, and he went on to win the Brickyard 400 in 2024. Katherine Legge ran the 2025 Brickyard 400 and scored a career-high 17th before attempting the Memorial Day Double in 2026.
It marked the first time that a Memorial Day Double attempt had been made in three straight seasons since 1999 to 2004 featured six straight, two by Tony Stewart and four by Robby Gordon.
While Larson's two attempts were confirmed well over a year before the first got underway, Legge's came together literally at the last minute. So while there isn't currently anything lined up for 2027, don't sleep on the possibility.
Corey Heim won't rule out Indy 500 after Brickyard 400 win
The possibilities for 2027 do not include Corey Heim, who won the Brickyard 400 in his first attempt with 23XI Racing and, at 24 years old, might well be the driver with the best chance of winning both Indianapolis crown jewels before his career comes to an end.
"Not any deep thought," Heim admitted to Beyond the Flag. "I think I’m kind of at the point in my career now where I just need to make sure that I sort of make a comfortable bed in NASCAR, if you will. I feel like right now I’m sort of getting my feet in the door and I haven’t even had a full-time season."
Naturally, any Indy 500 attempt during his NASCAR career would have to be a part of a Memorial Day Double shot, and there are definitely more than a few logistical hurdles to clear to make that happen.
"Still trying to sort all that out and make sure I’m comfortable in NASCAR before I get too crazy and try to do two races in the same day."
But he also admitted that his "no" right now might not be a permanent no, and that once he establishes himself as a competitive full-time Cup driver, he may be willing to revisit the possibility.
"I think that would be a really cool opportunity," he continued. "I think the gateway of doing it with Toyota and 23XI Racing isn’t as easy as some other teams maybe, but who knows? I mean, there could be some opportunities down the road, and it’s definitely – there’s not a 0% chance, by any means. Let’s put it that way."
Heim has already established himself as a Cup Series contender, even as a part-time driver. By winning two of his three starts in June and July, he became the first driver since 1965 to win twice within the first 15 starts of his Cup career.
And who did it in 1965? A.J. Foyt, four-time Indy 500 champion.
Heim is set to run full-time in the Cup Series starting in 2027, when he is set to replace Riley Herbst behind the wheel of the No. 35 23XI Racing Toyota alongside teammates Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace.
