Rumors of George Russell leaving Mercedes have been strong ever since the 2025 Formula 1 season. Given Toto Wolff’s ongoing strong admiration for Max Verstappen, it appears that Russell might even eventually be pushed out, if he does not leave on his own.
Ever since Russell made the move from Williams to Mercedes in 2022, he has emerged as one of the best drivers on the grid. The British driver truly started to make a name for himself when he beat Lewis Hamilton in their first season as teammates.
With the 28-year-old having entered the 2026 season with world championship expectations, nearly everyone is shocked to see Kimi Antonelli dominating him thus far, and Russell's several issues throughout the season have reignited rumors of a departure.
Audi eyeing George Russell for the future?
Audi have entered Formula 1 nicely this season, with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto getting the new era underway as their two drivers. But with aspirations of competing with the top teams in the near future, they are looking to make a big-name signing within the next 12 to 16 months.
Russell has emerged as a potential candidate for the 2028 season, amid speculation that his Mercedes stay will not extend past 2027. However, he may not find the move appealing enough.
Mercedes have started the current regulation era as the best team performance-wise, and that will likely continue throughout this season into 2027. Audi have quite a lot of improvement to make for Russell to even think about the move.
In the event that Russell does depart from Mercedes after 2027, chances are other top teams will make changes to their driver lineups as well. If that were to be the case, teams such Red Bull or McLaren would make far more sense for him to consider.
Audi might be able guarantee that Russell is one of the grid’s highest-paid drivers, along with the clear designation as the team's lead driver. However, would those matter more than Russell’s desire to win a world championship? His contract situation will certainly be one of the most interesting to monitor over the next 12 months or so.
