Mercedes have been the best team throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season, winning eight of 12 races thus far. With Kimi Antonelli leading the world championship by a considerable margin and George Russell fighting for P2, it is safe to say the team did a brilliant job developing the W17.
The Silver Arrows have also faced a lot of accusations of cheating and exploiting loopholes in the regulations, starting with their engine and continuing with certain design upgrades through the season.
However, after the Dutch Grand Prix, Toto Wolff made a stark reveal that Mercedes are struggling with funds to keep up the pace of upgrades in comparison to their rivals. He claims they are lacking against McLaren, which are in great form after having won two straight races. Mercedes have won just twice in the past six races, after opening up the year with six wins in a row.
Toto Wolff's statement designed to mislead?
When a team is at the top of the sport, especially on a consistent basis, they tend to develop a level of confidence and cockiness. As for Wolff, we have seen how sneakily he likes to operate, particularly during the height of his battles with Christian Horner at Red Bull.
With Ferrari and now McLaren closely tagging along, the gap could continue close rapidly over the next six to eight weeks. Giving the likes of Andrea Stella and Fred Vasseur a level of comfort without as much of a sense of urgency could become advantageous for the Brackley-based team.
There is no denying that Mercedes very well could have an impactful development package in the works. As such, Wolff could look to use the element of surprise to put Ferrari and McLaren further behind.
As we get on with the rest of the Formula 1 season, the truth about Wolff’s recent statement will show in the number of upgrades Mercedes bring to each race. However, it should be no shock if the Mercedes team boss was looking to use the media in an attempt to sandbag and deceive the team's rivals, with the hopes of catching them off guard down the road as the battles heat up.
