The legendary Wood Brothers Racing team has seen only a handful of drivers win while behind the wheel of the #21 Ford. Today, Ryan Blaney added his name to the list of winners by claiming his first ever NASCAR Cup Series victory at the tricky triangle of Pocono Raceway.
Blaney, only in his second year of racing in the Cup Series, took the lead from Kyle Busch after the final restart with just over fifteen laps to go. Busch, who led the most laps on the day with 100 of the 160 laps out front from pole, fought hard on a bold strategy led by an interim crew chief. Blaney would then go on to hold off Kevin Harvick for the first win for the Wood Brothers since Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 in 2011.
Kevin Harvick came home in 2nd for Stewart-Haas Racing, followed by rookie Erik Jones in 3rd in one of his strongest performances of the year. The Fords of Kurt Busch and Brad Keselowski rolled in to finish out the top five.
Perhaps the most dramatic moments of the race happened concurrently just before the end of stage two. Jimmie Johnson experienced brake failure entering turn one, crashing hard into the outside barrier. Meanwhile, just a few thousand feet away, Jamie McMurray saw his car go ablaze, one of two massive fires on the day at Pocono. The race would be red flagged for some time for cleanup.
