There are just four races remaining in the 2017 Formula One season, meaning the champion will be determined very soon. Here are some championship scenarios heading into the United States Grand Prix.

Just four races remain on the 2017 Formula One schedule. While it looks like this year’s championship will go to Mercedes’ Lewis Hamilton for the fourth time in his career, three drivers are still mathematically eligible to win the title.

Those three drivers are Hamilton, Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas. With four races left, there are still a maximum of 100 points on the table, and those three drivers are all within 72 points heading into the 17th race of the season in the United States.

Here are the current standings of the top 3 drivers.

Rank Driver Car Points Behind
1 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 306
2 Sebastian Vettel Ferrari 247 -59
3 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 234 -72

There are a few things to keep in mind here. The first thing is the tiebreaker system. If two drivers tie in points, the one with more wins gets the spot. If they tie in wins, the one with more 2nd place finishes gets the sport and so on.

Here are the current number of wins, 2nd place finishes, 3rd place finishes, 4th place finishes and 5th place finishes so far this season for each of the drivers in the top 3 in the standings with four races remaining.

Rank Driver Car Wins 2nd 3rd 4th 5th
1 Lewis Hamilton Mercedes 8 3 0 3 1
2 Sebastian Vettel Ferrari 4 5 1 3 0
3 Valtteri Bottas Mercedes 2 4 4 2 2

With four races to go, the only driver than cannot beat another driver if a tiebreaker comes into play is Valtteri Bottas, who cannot beat Lewis Hamilton through a tiebreaker. Bottas can still, however, beat Sebastian Vettel, and both Hamilton and Vettel can still beat each other.
