Formula One is eyeing a possible grand prix in downtown Miami, Florida as early as the 2020 season. Will it come to fruition?

The 2017 Formula One season only just came to a close this past Sunday with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, but the news surrounding the sport has not slowed down.

Recent news indicates that the sport is currently scouting an area for a potential new race that would take place as early as the 2020 season if everything successfully comes together.

That new race would take place in downtown Miami, Florida. The Miami Herald reported that Francis Suarez, the city’s new mayor, met with Formula One executives and engineers to discuss possible circuits for the race, and there were six suggested routes that came up in the discussion.

Such routes included streets around buildings such as the AmericanAirlines Arena, the home of the NBA’s Miami Heat, as well as on Dodge Island and through the Port of Miami Tunnel.

While Formula One currently has a United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, this race in Miami would not affect that; it would not be its replacement by any stretch of the imagination.

The sport has a 10-year deal with Circuit of the Americas and the race was held there for just the sixth year in a row this past season, so there is no need to worry there, even in 2020, which is scheduled to be the ninth season for the track to host a Formula One race.

With Liberty Media Corporation having just purchased Formula One within the last year, it would not be surprising to see this race take place in Miami in the 2020 season. The mass media company has stated that they want to grow the sport’s presence in the United States, and a city such as Miami would be a great place to do just that.
