Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport have finally earned their first victory of the 2018 Formula 1 season with Lewis Hamilton’s win in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

After failing to win three consecutive races for the first time in the V6 turbo hybrid era to start the 2018 Formula 1 season, Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport finally got back on the right track with a win in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix .

Lewis Hamilton won the race on the 20-turn, 6.003-kilometer (3.73-mile) Baku City Circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan, but his win came at the expense of the team’s other driver, Valtteri Bottas.

Bottas was leading the race with just three laps to go, and he had led 18 laps in a row at that point after inheriting the race lead following the pit stop of Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, the race’s polesitter who led the first 30 laps of the event.

Bottas pit during the safety car period that took place as a result of the wreck between Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen on lap 39 of the race’s 51 laps to maintain his lead.

After holding of Vettel, who locked up his tires in an attempt to go from second to first over Bottas on the restart and lost a few spots as a result of it, Bottas appeared to be in a position to win his first race of the season.

However, it was not meant to be. With three laps remaining, the right rear tire of Bottas’ car sustained a puncture, and he would ultimately be shuffled back to 14th place, last among drivers who had not yet been forced to retire.

While things were bad on one end of the Mercedes garage, they were pleasant on the other, as it was Hamilton taking advantage of Bottas’ misfortune and taking the lead of the race before going on to lead the race’s final three laps, thus securing his first victory and Mercedes’ first victory of the 2018 Formula 1 season.
