Kyle Larson took the pole position for the 16th race of the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway.

For just the third time in 16 races so far in the 2018 NASCAR Cup Series season, a Chevrolet driver is set to start a race from the pole position.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson took his second pole position of the 2018 season, as he took the pole for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in Sonoma, California. The other pole he took so far this season was for the race at Dover International Speedway in Dover, Delaware back on the first Sunday in May.

The race at Dover was the 11th race of the season, and no Chevrolet driver had taken a pole position since then until now. The only other Chevrolet driver to take a pole so far this season is Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman.

Bowman took the pole for the season opener, the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida, in his #88 Chevrolet back in mid-February.

Larson took the pole position for the Toyota/Save Mart 350 by recording a top lap time of 75.732 seconds (94.597 miles per hour) around the 10-turn, 1.99-mile Sonoma Raceway road course. Chevrolet drivers took four of the top five and six of the top eight positions on the speed chart in this qualifying session.

Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. was the highest qualifying Toyota driver. He qualified in second place in his #78 Toyota. Stewart-Haas Racing’s Kevin Harvick was the highest qualifying Ford driver. He qualified in sixth in his #4 Ford.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott, Chip Ganassi Racing’s Jamie McMurray and JTG Daugherty Racing’s A.J. Allmendinger rounded out the top five in third, fourth and fifth place in their #9 Chevrolet, #1 Chevrolet and #47 Chevrolet, respectively.
