IndyCar: Felix Rosenqvist to Chip Ganassi Racing in 2019?
By Asher Fair
Rumors involving Felix Rosenqvist signing with Chip Ganassi Racing for the 2019 IndyCar season have picked up. Will the two parties reach an agreement?
After it was believed that Formula E driver Felix Rosenqvist would sign with Chip Ganassi Racing ahead of the 2018 IndyCar season, the team announced that they would be downsizing, moving from a four-car full-time operation to a two-car full-time operation. They had not operated as a two-car team since the 2010 season.
As a result, Rosenqvist ended up returning to Formula E for his second season driving for Mahindra Racing. Ed Jones, who drove for Dale Coyne Racing last year in his rookie IndyCar season, was signed by Chip Ganassi Racing.
However, the rumors that the 26-year-old Swede will sign with Chip Ganassi Racing have returned. Jones has had somewhat of a rough season, as he sits in 12th place in the championship standings with two podium finishes and seven top 10 finishes through the season’s first 15 races. Meanwhile, his teammate and four-time IndyCar champion Scott Dixon leads the standings.
With Chip Ganassi Racing set to continue running only two cars on a full-time basis next year, there are rumors that Rosenqvist could replace Jones as the drive of the #10 Honda and be the teammate to Dixon as early as 2019. Will it happen?

Rosenqvist tested an IndyCar for Chip Ganassi Racing in 2016 and 2017, and following his test for the team at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course last year, Dixon’s race engineer Chris Simmons described the test as “flawless”.
Rosenqvist has been successful in pretty much every series in which he has driven. He won the 2008 Formula Renault 2.0 Asia championship, the 2009 Formula Renault 2.0 Sweden championship, the Formula Renault 2.0 NEZ championship and the 2015 FIA European Formula 3 Championship. He also won the Masters of Formula 3 race in both 2011 and 2013 and the Macau Grand Prix in both 2014 and 2015.
In the 2016 season, Rosenqvist drove for Belardi Auto Racing and competed in 10 of the 18 Indy Lights races that were contested. He won three of those races and finished in 12th place in the championship standings even though he barely competed in more than half of the season’s races.
The past two years, Rosenqvist has competed full-time in Formula E. He finished in third place in last season’s championship standings with one victory and five podium finishes in 12 races, and he finished in sixth in this season’s championship standings with two victories, which were his only two podium finishes of the season.
Rosenqvist clearly has a solid racing resume and would likely be able to contend for wins in IndyCar, especially driving for one of the sport’s top teams. Will he get the chance to do so?
Here is what Rosenqvist had to say about his future, according to Autosport.com
"“It looks like I will continue with them [Mahindra]. I’m also looking at some other things. It’s not set, it’s quite open. In some way, I will continue with Mahindra, definitely. I’m always looking to do other things as well. Obviously Formula 1 is not on the poster for me at this point – that would always be the target. Apart from that, I think it’s IndyCar or Formula E.“I think DTM [in which he competed in 2016] is not really in the same place as it was a few years ago. Now it’s Formula E or go to the States. Those two are top of the list, I would say.”"
Will Felix Rosenqvist sign with Chip Ganassi Racing as the replacement driver for Ed Jones ahead of the 2019 IndyCar season? If not, will he return to Formula E next year and will Jones continue driving for Chip Ganassi Racing?
