NASCAR Cup Series: Chase Elliott wins 2018 Hollywood Casino 400

Chase Elliott earned his third career NASCAR Cup Series victory in the third race of the round of 12 of the 2018 playoffs, the Hollywood Casino 400.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Chase Elliott entered the second round of the four-round, 10-race 2018 NASCAR Cup Series playoffs, the round of 12, having earned one victory in his Cup Series career. He earned this victory in the race at Watkins Glen International earlier this year.

Elliott won the opening race of the round of 12 at Dover International Speedway to clinch himself a spot in the third round, the round of 8, and he closed out the round of 12 with a win the Hollywood Casino 400 at Kansas Speedway.

Elliott, who started the the 267-lap race around the four-turn, 1.5-mile (2.414-kilometer) Kansas Speedway oval in Kansas City, Kansas in 13th place his #9 Chevrolet, won it by 0.903 seconds over Joe Gibbs Racing’s Kyle Busch, who finished in second place in his #18 Toyota.

Chip Ganassi Racing’s Kyle Larson, Joe Gibbs Racing’s Erik Jones and Furniture Row Racing’s Martin Truex Jr. rounded out the top five by finishing in third, fourth and fifth place in their #42 Chevrolet, #20 Toyota and #78 Toyota, respectively.

Team Penske teammates Brad Keselowski, Ryan Blaney and Joey Logano were the highest finishing Ford drivers of the race. They finished in sixth, seventh and eight place in their #2 Ford, #12 Ford and #22 Ford, respectively.

Hendrick Motorsports’ Alex Bowman and Stewart-Haas Racing’s Aric Almirola rounded out the top 10 by finishing in ninth and 10th place in their #88 Chevrolet and #10 Ford, respectively.

The race featured a total of 11 lead changes among eight drivers. Aside of Elliott, who led 44 laps, seven other drivers led at least one lap of the race. Those drivers were Keselowski, Blaney, Logano, Kevin Harvick, Ricky Stenhouse Jr., A.J. Allmendinger and Darrell Wallace Jr,

Logano, who started the race from the pole position, led more laps than anybody else in the field with 100 laps led. He won stage one. Harvick, who finished in 12th place, won stage two and appeared to have a great chance to win the race before he was issued a penalty for speeding in the pits during his final pit stop. At this point in time, he was the race leader. Elliott inherited the lead at this time and never gave it up.

The race also featured a total of three caution flag periods for 17 laps. Of these three caution flag periods, only one took place as a result of an on-track incident, as the other two took place as a result of the endings of stages one and two like usual. Of the 40 drivers who started the race, 34 finished it. Of the 34 drivers who finished it, 13 finished it on the lap.
