Lewis Hamilton earned his 10th victory of the 2018 Formula 1 season in the season’s penultimate race, the Brazilian Grand Prix, at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.

Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport’s Lewis Hamilton earned his 10th victory of the 21-race 2018 Formula 1 season by stealing a victory in the season’s penultimate race, the Brazilian Grand Prix, at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace.

Hamilton started the 71-lap race around the 15-turn, 2.677-mile (4.309-kilometer) Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace road course in Sao Paulo, Brazil from the pole position before going on to win it by 1.469 seconds over Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen, who finished in second place.

However, the race appeared to be well in the hands of Verstappen, who started in fifth place and worked his way up to second before Hamilton made his pit stop. Verstappen took the lead after making his pit stop several laps later.

Verstappen made his pit stop from the lead of the race and fell back to third place behind teammate Daniel Ricciardo, who had not yet made his pit stop, and Hamilton. Ricciardo then made his pit stop and Verstappen blew by Hamilton before pulling away.

However, Racing Point Force India’s Esteban Ocon attempted to unlap himself by passing Verstappen, who appeared to be well on his way to earning the victory, on lap 44. In doing so, he collided with the car of the 21-year-old Dutchman, sending him spinning.

Verstappen got back on the track, but he was several seconds behind Hamilton. He was able to close the gap before the race ended, but he was unable to pass Hamilton to earn what would have been his sixth career victory.

Scuderia Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen, Ricciardo and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas rounded out the top five by finishing in third, fourth and fifth place, respectively. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel, Alfa Romeo Sauber’s Charles Leclerc, Haas teammate Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen, and Racing Point Force India’s Sergio Perez rounded out the top 10 by finishing in sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and 10th place, respectively.

The race featured a total of four lead changes among three drivers. Aside of Hamilton, who led more laps than anybody else in the field with 46 laps led, two other drivers led at least one lap of the race. Those drivers were Verstappen and Ricciardo. Of the 20 drivers who started the race, 18 finished it and nine finished it on the lead lap.
